Why is the Moonbreon so valuable?

"Moonbreon" is the nickname the community gave to the Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art (Secret) from Evolving Skies. Released in August 2021, it became one of the most recognizable chase cards in the modern TCG era within weeks of launch.

Several factors converge to keep demand persistently high:

Umbreon is a Gen 2 icon

Umbreon has one of the most dedicated fan bases of any Pokémon — consistent, emotional demand that does not fade with meta shifts.

The illustration is exceptional

The night-time, moonlit aesthetic by illustrator Mitsuhiro Arita is widely regarded as one of the best compositions in modern TCG history.

Extremely low pull rate

Alt Arts are secret rares with pull rates around 1 in 720 packs. Supply is structurally limited, and Evolving Skies is no longer in print.

Community consensus chase card

When a card achieves this level of community recognition, demand becomes self-reinforcing. New collectors learn about it immediately.

Is it worth grading your Moonbreon?

Given the price spread between raw NM (~€310) and PSA 10 (~€750+), grading can make financial sense — but only if you have a genuine PSA 10 candidate.

Sample ROI calculation (PSA Express tier)

Raw NM purchase price€310
PSA Express grading fee≈ €50
PSA 10 sale price€750
Net profit (if PSA 10)€390 (+126%)

The key risk: a PSA 9 result on a card bought as NM can still result in a loss after fees. Only grade if you are confident the card will achieve PSA 10. Use CardSense's grading ROI calculator to model different outcomes before committing.
